NickNames:
Large Marge, Margie Pargie, Margerie
Favorite Day: eat, sleep, cuddle,
repeat
Marge is a purebred English Bulldog, approx 5-7 years old (maybe
older, we don't know). She is an owner surrender from KS, her original
owners were older, one died and the other went to live in a nursing
home, the son got Marge and he couldn't care for her, so he took
her to the shelter. We stepped in to save her and are so glad we
did!
A little about Marge: She is
a very easy dog. She is housebroken and she will go in a crate (with
some tempting). We have six dogs and she does well with them, HOWEVER,
she does like to guard her toys and things, and she will get nasty
over her "stuff". She does not like to play with other
dogs, and none of our dogs try to get her to play, she leaves them
alone, they leave her alone and all is well. She could not live
with a very playful or pushy dogs--she's too mellow and can get
grumpy. She likes to just hang out and isn't too active. She's 50
lbs, a little on the "large" side, but the vet said she's
not a bad weight for her size and she has dropped a little weight
since we have her. She has a pretty bad underbite, and is probably
not the most highly bred dog, but we think she's adorable!
She has both hearing and vision impairment, but to what degree we
don't know. I know she can hear "some" stuff and I know
she can see okay, but it's hard to guage how far or clear she can
either hear or see. She gets around pretty good but is hesitant
to come sometimes when you call her, which makes me think she maybe
can't see you or hear you very good when you are calling her from
across the room or yard. She makes her way around the house very
good, but likes to stay on the main floor, not really into going
up and down the stairs. She startles often when you put your hand
on her or pat her, so I think she either can't hear or see you coming
sometimes, but she can see food, if you put a treat in front of
her, she will go for it!!
When outside, she needs a fence. She likes to wander around and
has no recall, so for her safety, a fence is critical. Though she
can't jump, so the fence doesn't have to be tall. She hates being
on leash, she falls to the ground thinking you are killing her,
so she really needs a fenced yard.
She has dry-eye syndrome in both eyes, and requires daily care/cleaning/drops
x3 for her eyes. It is not difficult, it takes about 5 minutes to
do, but needs to be done regularly to keep her eyes clear and comfortable.
She also has cataracts and cherry eye on the right. She saw a specialist
who recommended we not do surgery at this time, but that it may
be necessary in the future--this is something her new home would
need to be financially prepared for!!
We want a serious owner for her, someone who will not be deterred
by her age and medical needs :) People interested in bulldogs just
because they "look" cute need to look elsewhere.
I think she's "okay" with respectful and calm kids, she
does fine with our daughter, Olivia, who is 8 months, but she can
get irritable. We do not allow Olivia to crawl on or around Marge.
She barked at Olivia when she was jumping and making a lot of noise
in her jumparoo. I think with respectful children (not toddlers),
who will pet her and respect her space, she'll do fine. She is a
sweet old gal and loves her tummy rubbed. She begs for food nonstop
(someone obviously fed her people food from the table, so this bad
habit needs to continue to be broken, we have made a lot of progress).
Sometimes she just barks for no reason in the middle of the night
(or in the middle of the day, she's not picky), but usually only
for a few minutes. I think she just does it for attention. She would
LOVE to sleep in the bed with someone but we have too many already
scrambling for the bed, so she sleeps on the couch or on her dog
bed in the crate.
She's a super, super sweet dog and will make someone an awesome
pet, but she needs a dedicated owner, without a lot of chaos in
their life, not a ton of kids or other pets, she likes a peaceful,
calm home life and enjoys getting the attention to herself. She
likes routine and has adjusted well to our schedule. She needs an
owner who understands the bulldog breed (stubborn, cranky, sweet
but if spoiled will run your life, etc).
Marge's adoption fee is $250.
